Browning Tree

It is with regret that we have to announce that the Browning Tree located at the junction of Station Road and School Road is scheduled to be felled on March 27th and 28th.

This horse chestnut tree was gifted to the Parish by Mr. James Browning, a publican from Cheltenham, who used to spend his leisure hours at the Kings Head.  The tree originally stood on the village green outside the Kings Head pub, but was relocated after the First World War, when the war memorial was erected (this too, was subsequently relocated to its current position at the top of Church Road).  A metal framed wooden seat was placed around the tree and this has now been relocated to the Parish Gardens, where the  seats have been replaced using old pews from St. Michaels and All Angels Church.

Unfortunately, the tree now has significant die-back in the crown and some disease in the trunk and as such, poses a risk to safety given its close proximity to overheadwires, passing traffic and near-by properties.
